A
moving experience
Make sure you
don't lose your mind -- or your piano -- when you move.

Doing
your homework before making a move can save you money, time and
heartache. Take the time to make a plan.
Most
corporations have a relocation package for new employees. The
packages can differ, depending on whether you are a chief executive
officer or someone a little lower on the ladder. In some cases,
you may be on your own for expenses.
If
your company is paying for the move, it likely will want to use
a moving company it is familiar with.
If
you are selecting the mover, take the time to choose the right
one. Too often, the decision is made without thought.
To
find a good mover ask friends and neighbors.
The
local Better Business Bureau is another good place to check.
When
you're ready ready, ask your prospective movers for estimates
in writing. And investigate the fee for moving insurance.
The
cost of the move will depend on the distance, amount of possessions
and number of belongings requiring special care, such as a piano.
Most
movers will require a cash payment, either by certified check
or money order. A few will accept credit cards. Most won't accept
a personal check.
Most
people opt to do their own packing because it is expensive to
have the moving company do it for them.
Before
you pack, go through your belongings and decide whether you want
to donate anything to charity, sell it or just throw it out.
Also
make sure you are using the proper size of box. Try to avoid boxes
that are too large or too heavy for the movers. It's also a good
idea to be on a site when the movers are both loading and unloading.
Be
sure that the moving company has a working telephone number at
which they can reach you in the event of an emergency on the day
of the move. Also give the moving company a telephone number at
the new destination.
